Gear and Screw – A Dynamic Interactive Movie Browser
"Gear and Screw" is a dynamic interactive movie browser based on Hugo, an award-winning fantasy movie directed by Martin Scorsese. The browser allows its users to explore early film histories while interacting with intricate movie details. There are three different browsing experience paths. The first path is based on the locations in the movie. In this path, Hugo, the main character in the movie, takes users on a train ride and shows them different attractions across Paris. There are six stops where users can get off and explore the hidden film history in the movie based on the locations. Users can also collect rewards from learning film history, which helps them conquer the “Challenge” feature. The “Scenes” feature gives users the possibility to filter and watch scenes based on the elements of their interest, such as characters, places, events, and colors. The third browsing experience path leads users to the historical timelines of the early films. Users can drag the lines to see what happened in film history each year. Engaged users are more likely to become loyal and remain so over the long term. So it is essential to consider user engagement while designing the user experience. To make the browsing experience more engaging and playful, I created the “Challenges” feature. Users can collect reward badges along the train ride by learning early film histories. The final prize is a Trip to the Moon sketch by Georges Méliès. This project aims to develop a unique and educational environment to help the users to understand and explore the content and structure of the movie Hugo.
