PM 2.5
This series of artwork illustrates the smog problem in China to raise public attention to this crisis. Current severe smog in northern China is affecting nearly half a billion people. "PM 2.5" is the abbreviation for fine Particulate Matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 microns. It is this toxic fine substance that causes smog in China. I experienced the deadly smog in China a few years ago and realize how urgent it is to bring attention to this severe crisis. My work involves materials like masks, chiffon, plastic, and baby powder to simulate the smog. The hand signs indicate people's reactions. My artwork is influenced by the contemporary artist Sam Taylor-Johnson who uses balloons in her "Escape Artist" to convey weightlessness and helplessness. Chinese artist Wu Di's "Face Mask" project inspired me to use art to raise public attention to China's environmental crisis.
